Heart Word Go Fish
Make high-frequency word practice the highlight of your day with the Heart Words Go Fish Game. This engaging, hands-on digital resource is designed to reinforce the Science of Reading through play, helping students move beyond rote memorization to true orthographic mapping.
By focusing on "Heart Words"—high-frequency words with irregular spelling patterns—this game provides a fun, low-stress environment for students to master the parts of words they must learn "by heart".
Inside the Game:
Customizable Deck: Print two copies of the included Heart Word sheets on heavy cardstock to create your deck. Each card clearly identifies "tricky" irregular parts with a heart symbol, providing a vital visual cue for learners.
Simple Setup & Play:
2–3 Players: Deal 7 cards each.
4+ Players: Deal 5 cards each.
The remaining cards form "The Pond".
Skill-Building Mechanics: Players ask opponents for specific words, using their fingers to track the letters as they read aloud. If they don't find a match, they "Go Fish!" and draw from the pond.
Engagement-Focused Rules: The game ends when all pairs are collected. If a player runs out of cards, they draw 3 new ones to stay in the action, ensuring constant participation.
Literacy Best Practices Included:
Read Aloud Integration: Every request and match requires students to say the word aloud, building essential reading automaticity and fluency.
Corrective Feedback Routine: Includes a specific routine for handling misread words: say the word, have the student repeat it, and point out the "heart" part to anchor the irregular pattern in their memory.
Transform your literacy instruction with a game that bridges the gap between decoding and fluency. The Heart Words Go Fish Game is perfect for classroom centers, reading intervention, or at-home learning.
